Pipeline Welder Training

Part of the new Howell Davies facility here at Crows Nest, Queensland will be our core emphasis on Welder Training including Weld Procedure Development and Qualifications and also ongoing re-training of experienced hands in new techniques, technologies and standards.

Howell Davies Welding factory and training facility

A permanent fixture in our yard will be the ability to reenact and recreate field Pipeline Welding environments and procedures to prepare existing and promising talent for upcoming pipe weld projects.
Our Pipeline Welder Training abilities will include training in:

  1. Manual Stovepipe mainline welding setup:

    • Internal clamp technique focussing on joint spacing, handling high/low, heavy/light landings.
    • Running effective bead runs, pointers on electrode angle, pressure, travel speeds & inputs.
    • How to handle tight and wide fitups.
    • Hot Pass techniques including addresssing "What is the purpose of a Hot Pass?"
    • Teaching correct effective welding technique for likely situational challenges.
    • Filling pass techniques on light and heavy wall.
    • Correct amperage settings, stacking / flick techniques.
    • How to keep the bottoms tight clean.
    • Capping on light wall and heavy wall, how technique can differ.
    • Things that make life hard on the line and how to best counteract
ie: wind, dust, heat, sparks and how correct PPE is vital.

  2. Learn how to cut pipe effectively and correctly:

    • Using saddle cutters, band type with crawler and the basic chain cutters.
    • How to dress pipe quickly and efficiently prior to welding.
    • Correct use of grinders facing pipe, picking the right disc diameter and thickness for the task.

  3. Tie Inn Welding:

    • Setting up joints with external clamp.
    • Dealing with poor fit up and clamp manipulation / positioning.
    • Explanation of "Breakover", sling positioning and marking pipe prior to cutting.
This particular skill can only be fully understood and mastered after completing a few projects with an experienced hand.

  4. Semi automatic welding - STT open root beads with fux core fill & cap in habitat confines.

  5. Full automatic stations from pipe facing/compound bevelling all the way from
open or backed root passes to the final cap pass.
As a Pipe Welder myself I understand the challenges & stresses involved in this job.

By spending the necessary time to prepare a professional training environment and with continuous input from my team of seasoned and respected pipeline welders I hope to train, develop and ultimately produce highly capable welding professionals that will be a credit to my company and to the pipeline industry for years to come!
